SULDEN HIGH ALTITUDE TRAIL

First of all climb the mountain with the Langenstein chairlift to the Langenstein tavern. From there the high altitude trail will lead you on a hike with magnificent scenery over the western slopes of the Ortler (highest mountain in the Eastern Alps). In the process we will cross over glacier moraines, ancient boulder fields, grassy Alpine areas and briefly too over rock faces that have been made accessible using wire ropeways and wooden footbridges. The Hintergrat Hut is in an especially beautiful location, directly opposite the famous northern face of the Koenigsspitze, one of the many three thousand metre plus mountains that surround the Sulden Valley. From the hut the route continues to the Unterer Gratsee lake and down past the ruins of the former Baeckermann Hut and across to the Sulden cable car mid-point station. Take the cable car back into the valley, and finally follow the lovely “Kulturweg” (culture trail) back, in leisurely fashion, to the starting point.
